In an effort to stymie my own verbosity, I am going to try and keep this as short and as sweet as possible.
A group reading, discussion and engagement with Killing Rage: Ending Racism by bell hooks.
If you would like to participate in this undertaking, please join pocnexus. This is a community of mine which is under-utilized. I considered using other communities, however, when one of the mods left that community (there were only two of us), I realized that I was over-looking my own spaces of resistance. So I would like to re-open it. The membership is open and everyone is welcome.
The reading of the book will be divided into chunks of 45 pgs for 6 weeks and one week for decompression and planning. The reason why I decided to spread it out this way is multi-faceted. Because this reading will include all kinds of people from all imaginable walks of life, I do not want anyone freaking out because they don’t have enough time in a day to read the book. The cut-offs I made are consistent in regard to theme, but also stretch across each other to render a large band of complex questions, hopes and imaginings. That said, I do not want college students to feel they cannot participate because of their work load. 45 pages -- give or take -- can be read in conjunction with your study. But also for single mothers and fathers, and people who work outrageous hours, etc. If this pace is too slow, I invite you to read other books that perhaps inform your reading. For example, there are a couple of books I plan to read while I am re-reading this book. Don’t be scared or frightened -- this is going to be pleasurable. J
For those who are re-reading this text, I would like to make this more interesting for you by asking you to email me privately if you would like to lead discussions on certain parts of the reading. By “lead,” I mean to facilitate a discussion. There can be more than one person facilitating and I think this would be good as different points of view are needed and welcomed. (No, for real.)
Everyone, please, take a position, an honest position of where you are right now. Taking a position is useful because it allows people to see where they are and when they have changed location, to understand where they are.
Discussions are probably going to be all over the board. From analytical to raw, emotional to revelations, “safe” and “unsafe.” Please choose what you are prepared for carefully because I do expect everyone -- self-included -- to act like an adult. I-statements are fabulous. Please participate in the discussions in order to get the most out of your reading.
At the same time, I do not want “manners” or “proper/accepted” communication to be used as a way to silence voices. So, communicate however you need -- just make your point or express whatever, but please do not attack another reader. Attacking a point-of-view is not the same as attacking a person.
I have many more notes, but my kidneys are hurting and I wanna lay down so I am going to wrap this up. I think it is kinda… obvious how this is going to work, but I am not spelling it out yet so please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns or what not. My email address is kyooverse at gmail dot com. Email with care. ::grin::
The reading starts tomorrow. You can read with a highlighter or writing in your margins and then create a post (and be aware -- you are posting as much for yourself as other people so don’t look at this as a popularity contest, k?). Reading weeks will run from Monday to Sunday to give everyone the work week AND the weekends to read.
This week, the reading is:
Date: Jan. 2 - 8
Pages: i - 50
Killing Rage: Militant Resistance
Beyond Black Rage: Ending Racism
Representations of Whiteness in the Black Imagination
This is a dream for me.
Thank you all,
