Sakia Gunn

(x-posted in debunkingwhite)

I wonder how many people have heard of Sakia. I'd almost like to do a poll. How many folks know Mathew Shepard's name? How many know about Sakia?

also, i meant to post this here earlier and didn't:

Man Admits Killing Gay Teen, Gets 20 Years

NEWARK, N.J. -- A man who admitted fatally stabbing a 15-year-old lesbian during a confrontation on a downtown street was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in prison.

Richard McCullough had faced up to 30 years after pleading guilty last month to aggravated manslaughter, aggravated assault and bias intimidation.

McCullough, 30, had been charged with bias murder in the May 2003 killing of Sakia Gunn, but that charge was dropped as part of a plea bargain.

Gunn and four other girls were waiting for a bus in downtown Newark when McCullough and another man drove up and asked them if they wanted to go to a party. Officials said the girls responded that they were lesbians and were not interested.

The men began spewing homophobic insults and a fight began, authorities said. Gunn was stabbed as she came to the defense of a friend.

So, I've just seen Venus Boyz...I'd been wanting to see it for a long time, and lucky me, we were assigned to watch it for my History of Sexuality class.

I've now completely fallen head over heels with Storme Webber, and I can't seem to find any up-to-date info on Storme anywhere on the web. I don't actually think ze's referred to by name anywhere in the movie, and so it took me about two hours of searching just to find out hir name.

So, I thought I'd post around the queer communities on LJ and see if anyone knows where I can find anything out about Storme.

Rashawn Brazell

A bit more info on Rashawn Brazell, the gay African-American 19-year-old whose murder mr_flabulous posted about in the first link of this post on the Sakia Gunn verdict.

Shockingly (not), the Anti-Violence Project (an NYC organization working against violence against GLBTQ people) reports that the police have not been satisfactorily responsive in investigating his death.

Warning about clicking those links: he was murdered violently, and the details may be triggering.
