Mr. Gruff

My dad tipped me off to this article in my hometown paper. I'm curious to see what y'all think about it:

Boys in pink skirts? School finds nothing funny about it

I can't really decide how I feel about it. I'm a little bit impressed that they would be so sensitive to the possibility of offending transgendered students (and impressed that the principal even knows the word 'transgendered', and curious whether there are any trans students at the school), but it also sounds like there's some fear of atypical gender expression happening, or at least a suggestion that that's the exclusive domain of queer people and anyone else engaging in non-traditional gender expression constitutes mockery. It seems like their hearts are in the right place, but also like they're just reaffirming gender roles in some way.
