San Diego GLBTIQQ Youth Prom, 21 June 2003

SAN DIEGO, CA. - May 30, 2003
The San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center is excited to announce that the fifth annual LGBT youth prom will take place on Saturday, June 21, from 6 to 10 p.m. The theme for this year's prom will be "A Midsummer Night's Dream Masquerade."

The LGBTQ youth prom first began in 1999 with an attendance of 50 youth and has grown every year, with last year's attendance totaling 300 youth. The prom is targeted towards youth ages 14-24 and is a free event.

Planning and fundraising for this year's event have been conducted almost entirely by the Youth Leadership Council (YLC), a group of dedicated youth volunteers who plan and coordinate activities and events for the Hillcrest Youth Center. Since February of this year, the YLC has been working diligently to make this year's event elegant, fun and inviting. YLC member Benjamin Ignalino states, "The LGBTQ youth prom is such a necessity in this community. Not many youth who identify at such young ages ever have the opportunity to feel comfortable in their own environment. That is why this event has become so popular among the LGBTQ youth community." Jennifer Davis-DeFeo, coordinator of youth services for The Center, adds, "It gives our youth a safe place to just be themselves without having to worry about hate remarks and other discriminatory behaviors that are common in high schools."

Members of the YLC have conducted several car washes to raise monies for the prom. The last scheduled carwash will be held on Sunday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Center, 3909 Centre Street.
