Chinese actor Leslie Cheung, who received wide acclaim for his role as a gay opera singer in "Farewell, My Concubine," jumped to his death on Tuesday in Hong Kong, international news outlets reported. He was 46 years old.

Cheung, who was also a Cantonese pop singer, reportedly leapt from the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hong Kong's Central district. Police said a suicide note was found on Cheung's person. The note's contents were not disclosed, but one cable television station reported it said that the actor was suffering from emotional problems.

Cheung was a popular performer in Hong Kong, noted for being one of the few Chinese stars willing to play openly gay roles. After hearing of the star's sudden death, several Hong Kong radio stations halted programming to play his Cantonese love songs, Singapore's Straits Times reported. Fans also expressed their grief on call-in radio
shows and on Cheung's fan sites on the Internet.
